Desk Genie in Claude Desktop
Claude Desktop installs extension files that end in .mcpb. There are two. They have different names, so you can install both.
Before you start
- The files are unsigned, so Claude Desktop shows a warning. Install only files from this page, and check the SHA-256.
- Do not unzip a
.mcpbfile. If your browser made a folder, see "If the download goes wrong" below. - Never paste your access token into a chat. Claude Desktop asks for it in the extension's settings.
1. Hosted extension
Talks to characters on the Desk Genie service. Needs an access token. Each talk counts against your daily limit.
Download desk-genie-hosted.mcpb
SHA-256: loading
- Check the file:
The result must match the SHA-256 above. - Open the file. If nothing happens, open Claude Desktop, choose Settings, Extensions, Advanced settings, then Install Extension. Menu names can differ between versions.
- Confirm the unsigned warning. Paste your token into Desk Genie access token. Leave Server address alone.
- Turn the extension on. Start a new chat and ask: "List the Desk Genie characters, then ask Pip to say hello." Allow the tool when Claude asks.
2. Mac app extension
Makes your character speak and animate on your Mac. Needs the Desk Genie Mac app open, with Connect to Claude turned on in Settings, Apps and connections, Agent connections. No token.
SHA-256: loading
- Check the file with
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/desk-genie.mcpband open it. - Confirm the unsigned warning and turn the extension on. Leave the key empty unless you are sharing character information.
- Start a new chat and ask Claude to make your character wave. If Claude says the server could not connect, open the app and turn on Connect to Claude, then start a new chat.
Optional: desk-genie-skill.zip tells Claude when and how to use the Mac app tools. Claude Desktop takes it through its own skill or custom plugin upload.
If the download goes wrong
- The browser saved a .zip or made a folder. Delete the folder. Rename
desk-genie-hosted.ziptodesk-genie-hosted.mcpb. A.mcpbfile is a zip file, so the contents are the same. - Use the terminal instead.
- The hash does not match. Delete the file, download it again, and do not install a file with a different hash.
More fixes are in the Claude Desktop guide. Coding agents can read AGENTS.md.
